KeepAmericaCleanSaturday was a time of spring cleaning

in Alachua as city staffers, elected officials and residents rolled up their sleeves and put on work gloves. Their efforts were all part of the Great American Cleanup campaign.  The annual community improvement program is sponsored nationally by Keep American Beautiful, which encourages cleanup events to take place throughout the country for the month of May.

Locally, workers set their sights on the Hal Brady Recreation Complex, San Felasco Conservation Corridor trail, Swick House and NW 157 Street, as well as at the end of 142nd Street where an abandoned mobile home had been removed.

Waste Pro and Christ Central Ministries donated breakfast and provided volunteers to participate in the cleanup.  LawnSouth Landscaping donated lunch, tools and equipment and Dominos Pizza donated pizza.

Items collected included enough tires to fill four 30-yard rolloff dumpsters, construction debris that filled six 30-yrd rolloff dumpsters, and yard waste and trash that filled three 20-yard rolloff dumpters. That was in addition to a 20-yard rear-loader garbage truck.

“We all try to do our part to keep Alachua beautiful,” explained City Manager Traci Cain. “We participate in this annual event, because we want to involve residents and businesses to help keep Alachua the Good Life Community.”
