On Thursday, March 4, a mother dropping off her child at a day care center in Alachua became the victim of a vehicle burglary.

The burglars watched her park, waited for her to go inside, smashed the passenger side window of her vehicle and stole her purse – all in about ten seconds.  The burglars got away unseen and unheard.

This is the fourth incident

reported in the city of Alachua within the past 30 days.

Burglary rings like this target areas such as shopping centers, day care centers, gyms, and gas stations.  They are well organized and work in groups, traveling throughout the state of Florida.  They are mostly after cash, credit cards and checkbooks.

Do not leave items of value in your vehicle.  When leaving your vehicle unattended, shut your windows and lock all doors.

If you must leave a purse or other items of value in your vehicle, place them in your trunk or a locked glove box.  At night, park in a well lit area, around other vehicles if possible.  Following these tips may help you avoid being a victim.

These burglars have been known to hang out in their vehicles watching other people in the parking lot.

If you do become the victim of a burglary, notify your local law enforcement agency and then your bank.  Cancel your credit and debit cards and cancel any checks that were stolen.

Report any suspicious activity to your local police department immediately.
